>> I am writing a review paper on modeling and simulation techniques used to solve problems of overcrowding in emergency departments. Its hard. I always thought that writing review papers was easy because all you had to do was collect a lot of literature, come up with a scheme to organize it, discuss gaps and insights, and direct readers towards future work. But, its not that simple if you want to write a good review paper that actually contributes to the field. The literature needs to be 'analyzed' and tied together to form a coherent argument. Its also slow work writing a 30-page journal paper and the review process takes forever.
>> I am presenting a workshop for the Women in Sciences and Technology summer camp at my school. The camp brings together girls from the 11th and 12th grade to encourage them to take up science, math, and technology careers. I thought about proposing a workshop for the girls and while looking around for ideas, came upon the website of the Flat Classroom Project. I loved the idea of the project and thought about proposing something similar for the workshop. The idea is that camp participants in the US will communicate with girls of the 11th grade in India and collaboratively learn about the benefits of choosing science and math careers. It will give us an insight into how culture influences career choice among women. This communication will take place via Internet-based tools like blogs, wikis, chat etc.
I called up my mom, who is a school teacher in India, and asked her if we could get her students interested in participating in a collaborative project with the camp participants. She was interested and spoke with her students who were excited at the idea of interacting with kids their age from the halfway across the world. Our proposal was accepted by the committee organizing the camp. Now I am working with my colleagues to flesh out how we will conduct the workshop. Distance and the time difference will make communicating a challenge, so we need to plan carefully. But I am really excited.
>> I am not going to [Teaching hospital] this week. Last month I spent 30 hours there conducting observations and I'm feeling quite tired with the travelling. So I'm going to take a break this week, though I feel bad thinking about how much data I could have collected this weekend. Such is the nature of a workaholic.
