The lava monster

I had a great time last night hanging out with people from school. I like my department, people are extremely friendly and social and having spent 2.5 years at this school and in this town, I feel comfortable and at home in this environment. Yesterday the school hosted a tour for new graduate students who have been offered admission for Fall 2007. Starting with breakfast, they had faculty presentations, meeting with the Dean and some professors, tour of the research labs, evening reception, and dinner at a faculty member's house to end the day. The school had invited some of us old grad students to participate in the lab tours, reception, and dinner to interact with the new students and give them information about the department, research, life in this town etc.

I volunteered to attend the reception and dinner, along with other friends from my cohort. We had a good time talking to faculty members, meeting and getting to know the new students and eating free food sponsored by the department. The atmosphere at these department social events is always very friendly and informal. Some of us walked to the house of the professor (about 15 minutes from school) in the freezing cold; I ran alongside a colleague's 5 year-old daughter on her little bicycle. It's always nice to get a glimpse into the personal life of a professor and I enjoyed talking to the different faculty members about non-research related stuff over wine and sushi. We (the graduate students) were talking about going dancing and the professors chimed in with how long it had been since they had done that. These faculty members are pretty young, mostly in their middle to late thirties. My friends and I finally took some of the new students to a bar downtown.

The highlight of the evening was this conversation between my colleague's 5-year-old daughter and the hostess's 4 year-old daughter, both intently watching My Little Pony: The Movie -

Hostess's 4-year-old (who owns the show and has probably seen it many times before): Wow that was fun. Do you wanna watch it again?
Colleague's 5-year-old (who's a little overwhelmed): I really like it but I don't want to watch it again.
Hostess's 4-year-old (not happy): Why?
Colleague's 5-year-old: Well, I don't like the lava monster. If I watch it again, I'll get nightmares tonight. So, let's not watch it again.

At this point the parents decided to intervene due to the serious business of the lava monster. Since, I've never watched the show, I was curious and looked up Wikipedia's page on the My Little Pony movie. Here's what I think they were refering to as the 'lava monster':

"Hydia's daughters, Draggle and Reeka, are inexperienced at causing mischief and fail utterly at ruining the festival. They return to the Volcano of Gloom in disgrace, where Witch Hydia presents a better plan - they'll make Smooze. The sisters collect a series of disgusting ingredients, but neglect to obtain the Phlume, the prospect of which terrifies them. The spell seems to work regardless, creating a pool of sentient purple lava that gleefully buries Ponyland."

Smooze. Sounds scary indeed.
